what is the best city in australia to visit as far as tourism/beauty goes for someone who has never been to australia let alone out of the US before??

I am from the United States and am planning a vaction in the summer to Australia, what city do you reccomend i should visit, why, what are some good tourist sites,restaurants,and what does Australia have to offer. Thank you.
