I know Asia is a poverty stricken continent but I am planning to visit Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore this summer. I have heard yakuza in Japan, triads in Hong Kong and pirates in Singapore. Are beggars a big problem over there? Would my life be in danger?

I need something for my 6-week trip to Japan (both rural and city areas), as well as for a six-day backpacking trip in New England. Can I find something ideal for both those?

So I live in Detroit and plan on traveling to many places at a time and sometimes by myself. Right now the way I plan to travel is through orbitz and it seems pretty cheap, but sometimes its super expensive. Like a flight from detroit to japan to australia to detroit is almost 5,000 bucks.

If I want to be a traveling fool what is the best way to go?
