can I use the same mobile handset I am using now if I go to Australia for a visit?

I’m from India. wishing to visit melbourne, australia in this june. I am now using Sony Ericsson W 700 in India. Can I use the same handset there.
How’s the mobile technology there? and the call rates and broad band rate?
